Carney Skold, a senior at University of California, Santa Cruz, who is interested in the medical field, is collecting medical supplies to take on a trip to rural clinics in Nicaragua.
Skold, whose family is from the San Lorenzo Valley, will collect over-the-counter medical supplies, including pain relievers, bandages, gauze, cold medicine, children’s vitamins and other home medical supplies at the Ben Lomond Fire House from Saturday, Aug. 6, through 13.
“They still have a lot of problems even getting things like Tylenol,” Skold said.
He will travel to Nicaragua with a team of doctors with Volunteers for Intercultural and Definitive Adventures to several rural villages. A health student, Skold will assist the doctors and begin learning about medicine for two weeks in early September.
“It’s going to be an interesting experience,” the 21-year-old said.
He hopes to transfer to Sacramento State or San Jose State University to study nursing after graduation.
“I’ve always been interested in getting into the medical field,” Skold said. “I’m excited to learn about the really basic diseases and being able to tell the symptoms.”
Skold’s parents, Bart and Honi (Claiborne) Skold, both graduated from San Lorenzo Valley High School. Donations can be dropped off at the Ben Lomond Fire House, 9430 Highway 9, or mailed to Carney’s grandmother, Shari Skold, at 224 Circle Drive, Ben Lomond, CA 95005.
