As fires raged out of control to the north, Scotts Valley and San Lorenzo Valley rallied to lend support.
Almost 103,000 acres burned in Sonoma and Napa counties, 1,500 homes were lost and 41 people lost their lives in what is being called the worst fire in the state’s history.
Here is a sampling of how the area leant support to the tragedy:
n Approximately 30 Brookdale Sonoma residents were evacuated and relocated to the Brookdale in Scotts Valley community. They are expected to return to their Northern California homes on Sunday, Oct. 22.
n Scotts Valley Feed mobilized area residents and raised more than $9,000 for animal supplies. Three truckloads of hay were driven to the charred area to feed horses, as well as grain, dog and cat food and medical supplies. The effort will be ongoing during the coming months.
n Boulder Creek Firefighters Josh Clark and Ben Slaughter responded Code 3 along with Ben Lomond firefighter Xavier Chavez and Engineer Matt Boynton to the Napa area to evacuate patients from multiple medical facilities. They left 10/10/17 at 3:15 p.m.and were released from the incident 10/13/17 at 10:27 p.m. Patients were transported to as far as Walnut Creek and Sacramento. They worked long hours with minimal sleep.
n A fire engine left from Scotts Valley Fire District on the morning of October 9 with a captain, engineer and two firefighters along with Branciforte, Santa Cruz, Central and Aptos as part of a Strike Team. They are currently assigned to the Central LNU Complex in Napa/Sonoma Counties. This Complex consists of three fires: Tubbs, Pocket and Nuns. The strike team leader was supplied by Central Fire Protection District and the strike team leader trainee came from Scotts Valley. They are working 24 hours on and 24 hours off. They are expected to be there through the week.
People can help the victims of wildfire devastation in Sonoma, Mendocino and Napa counties as well as the firefighters who are battling the flames.
