After those second servings and extra rounds of drinks that come with the holidays, people will have to fight for a spot on the treadmill come January 1.
Getting in shape is typically among the most common of New Year’s resolutions, and as a result, most gyms see the biggest spike in enrollment numbers after the turn of the calendar.
“There’s an increase in clients at the beginning of the year,” said Brian Dunniway, owner of Santa
Cruz Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts. “It’s a general rule in the industry.”
However, if cardio machines and dumbbells don’t appeal to you, several local martial arts establishments will be offering fitness boot camps, introductory fitness courses designed to help clients lose weight by training in a variety of martial arts-based workouts.
At his gym, Dunniway is offering a four-week “Fighting Fit Boot Camp” starting on Jan. 6.
The camp, he said, will consist of two sessions per week covering such techniques as resistance training, cardio and working different muscle groups for an overall body workout.
The sessions will be Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:45 am at 208 Mount Hermon Road in the Camp Evers shopping center.
Space is limited to twelve people and will cost $75 for non-members and $50 for members.

In Ben Lomond, Valley Tae Kwon Do, located at 9520 Mill Street, will be offering a boot camp course called “Tabata Bootcamp.”
The bootcamp consists of a three 30-minute sessions per week of high-intensity interval training to improve metabolism and aerobic capacity.
