Scotts Valley Middle School sixth-grader Dylan Dix helped the Santa Clara Blackhawks PeeWee A team to a state title this month.
The Blackhawks defeated the San Diego Ice Association 6-2 on Sunday, April 11, to capture the California Amateur Hockey Association state championship.
After the Blackhawks fell behind 1-0 at the start of the game, Dix scored, igniting a three-goal outburst by his team on the way to the win.
The Blackhawks had previously won the NorCal Championship, making them the top team in Northern California. They finished the season with a 50-3-3 record.
Nick Smith, a Scotts Valley resident and Mission Hill Middle School seventh-grader, helped the Blackhawks’ Bantam A team win the state championship in its division.
The team defeated the San Jose Jr. Sharks 4-2 in the final after Smith scored the Blackhawks’ first goal to tie the game at 1-1. The team scored an empty-net goal with seconds remaining for the final score. They finished the season with a 37-22-3 record.
The Blackhawks Bantam A team is coached by San Jose Sharks commentator Jamie Baker.
The Blackhawks are based in Fremont and have eight age-based divisions.
