Last Tuesday, Mountain Community Theater donated more than $5000 to the employees of the Boulder Creek Brewery, which was destroyed by a fire on March 29.
According to Peter Gelblum, vice president of MCT, all proceeds from the April 10 performance of “Damn Yankees” and donations from audience members at all of the shows were matched by the theater to accumulate the sum of $5,059.96.
“Their customers and employees are our audience members and performers too, so there’s a great deal of overlap and they are our friends and neighbors,” Gelblum said.
MCT’s President, Daria Troxell, said that the Brewery was always gracious to the theater, allowing members to come in after hours for cast parties.
“The employees don’t have anything, and jobs are not easy to come by these days,” Gelblum added.
The check was given to Mo Moscoe, a long time BC Brewery employee who coordinates benefits for the company, to distribute and coordinate the funds among employees in need.
“We created a math model that was based on the average hours of the last two weeks of people’s employment, and then we made shares and we have been distributing them accordingly,” Moscoe said.
So far, 39 employees have received shares, he said, with a substantial number of those people having been hired at the new BC Brewery office, 13101 Highway 9, and other local businesses.
“A couple of employees were generous enough to forgo their share and allow that to go to the more needy employees,” he said.
Moscoe also said that the BC Brewery is currently waiting for feedback from the county on the structural integrity of the burnt building at 13040 Highway 9, so that a plan for reconstruction can be formulated.
“We have all been very flattered and impressed by the community banning together and really supporting us during a hard time for everyone,” said BC Brewery employee Sarah Miksits.
