San Lorenzo Valley High School distance runners Cody Johnson, and Anna Maxwell, and Scotts Valley High School’s Vanessa Fraser each improved their personal records at the California Interscholastic State Track and Field meet at Buchanan High in Clovis on June 4 and 5.
Considering the three runners are freshmen and sophomores, there’s a bright future for the local athletes.
“Really, all I want to do is have fun while getting better,” Maxwell said. “It just feels good to show any amount of improvement.”
Each local runner shaved huge chunks of their times.
Johnson, SLVs sophomore distance runner, broke a 29-year-old San Lorenzo Valley frosh-soph record in the 800 meters finishing in 1:54.65, but did not make the state finals. He ran more than a second faster than his previous P.R. of 1:55.72.
“A lot of people are overlooking the accomplishment that Cody has earned here,” track coach Rob Collins said. “This record stood for over 29 years and Cody bested it fairly handily.”
Maxwell, a freshman, shattered her previous mark in the 3200 of 10:46.48, running the second fastest freshman time in the nation in10:29.74 while cutting almost 17 seconds off her prior PR and finishing 11th in the state.
“Anna finished just four seconds behind (Alejandra Barrientos’) frosh-soph record,” Collins said. “Ali was a special runner. Anna is in that class of runner. Anna is also very special runner.”
Scotts Valley sophomore Vanessa Fraser shrank her time in the 3200 meters in Clovis, dropping her time by over 14 seconds running a PR of 10.37.17 in the 3200 good for 15th and moving into the 12th fastest sophomore time in the nation.
