Alan Miller, materials engineer for Lockheed Martin, visited David Grant’s ROP Engineering Design class at San Lorenzo Valley High School last week.
Miller’s focus was on technology in carbon fiber and composite building materials. The students learned the science behind the materials and the history of how they have influenced engineering. Miller shared many samples of materials he has designed and built.
Miller also talked about his ongoing project, the cold-water pipe. The pipe, made of carbon fiber composite material, could someday provide electrical energy using the natural temperature gradient in the ocean near tropical waters.
The ROP engineering class learns applicable skills during class, and Miller, a local resident, shared with the students ways their education can apply to their future career.
