The Lynn Beebe College & Career Counseling Scholarship (LBCCCS) announced Monday that it awarded $2,500 each to four Scotts Valley High School (SVHS) seniors.
The four students demonstrated not only remarkable involvement in their school and community, but also boasted exceptional grades during their high school careers, the organization stated in a press release. Since its inception in 2012, the LBCCCS has awarded more than 25 scholarships, totaling nearly $60,000. In 2020, the board also granted $2,500 to the Scotts Valley Middle School Athletic Department.
Chloe Allen
Allen will attend UC Los Angeles where she will major in biological sciences, with an interest in public health and medicine. She graduated with a 4.44 GPA and was involved in the yearbook, drama and dance, the SV Haunted House (which raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society), California Scholastic Federation (CSF) and multiple community organizations.
Marshall Bailey
Bailey will be majoring in journalism at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He had leadership roles in Rotary International’s Interact Club, participated in cross country and wrote for the Press Banner. He graduates with a 4.58 GPA.
Sophia Nicholson
Graduating with a 4.51 GPA, Nicholson will attend San Diego State University where she will major in kinesiology, with a minor in interdisciplinary studies. She was the first female starter and captain on the SVHS football team and also plays and coaches softball. Her community volunteerism spans international and local projects, while also working part-time.
Willa Reed
Willa plans to focus on environmental studies and law while attending UCLA. She was actively involved in the Green Team, Haunted House, drama and spearheaded a Mental Health Awareness campaign at school. She also writes for the SV Times, focusing articles on local happenings.
“This year we received 25 applications, making the selection process very difficult,” said Mary Lonhart, LBCCCS president. “Every single student has worked diligently, with many overcoming some significant challenges, particularly during the last year-plus of remote learning. We are very proud to honor the memory of Lynn Beebe by awarding these exceptional young adults with a scholarship, and we look forward to hearing about each of their successes during their college careers.”
Formed in 2012, after Lynn Beebe’s death from breast cancer, the LBCCCS was originally focused on providing Scotts Valley High School students a grant in the form of financial assistance to obtain professional counseling and guidance in the successful pursuit of, and acceptance into, a two- or four-year college.
In 2020 and 2021, due to pandemic limitations, the board converted the awards to cash, with the funds to be used for college-related expenses.
Beebe was a longtime Scotts Valley Unified School District staff member, joining Scotts Valley Middle School full-time in 1992. Over the course of the next 20 years, she served as a teacher, counselor, basketball coach and athletic director, as well as providing college counseling services to local students independently.
