One man has been arrested after a rash of rock-throwing vandalism that has harassed homeowners and businesses for more than six months.
Zakari Adams, 22, was arrested in Arnold on June 8. Adams had lived in Aptos but moved to the Calaveras County town several days after the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office released video surveillance footage of the vandals last month.
A man suspected to be Adams is seen on tape hurling river rocks into the large front window of a Santa Cruz business at about 1:30 a.m. May 15, the sheriff’s office said.
Two other young men were seen in the video but have not been identified.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Dan Campos said more than one person pointed out the suspect.
“He’s looking at prison time if convicted for a felony vandalism,” Campos said.
Campos would not disclose whether Adams had made any statements or how many people identified him.
The incident caught on tape was one of more than 120 cases of rock-throwing vandalism in the county this year. Adams has not been linked to any other incidents in the spree that has left the windows of cars, homes and businesses shattered, causing more than $100,000 in damage.
He was arrested on a warrant for felony vandalism and a probation violation and is held on $25,000 bail in Santa Cruz County Jail.
Campos said that in the past three months, more than 20 cases of thrown river rocks have been reported in Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley.
