A 70-year-old man died last week after a fallen tree he was cutting rolled onto his body and pinned him.
George Doub of Scotts Valley was killed at about 2 p.m. Dec. 29 while cutting a fallen tree about 1-foot thick on the 100 block of Gaffney Way, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.
After Doub cut the trunk with a chainsaw, the tree reportedly rolled down a small hill and pinned him. He called for help, and a worker on a nearby property found him and phoned for help. By the time firefighters arrived and cut away the tree, Doub was dead.
A marriage and family counselor for more than 40 years, Doub co-founded Family Wellness in East San Jose and Santa Cruz in 1980. The organization focuses on low-income, multicultural communities.
