A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated June 8 in Felton for longtime Felton resident Maria Goncalves, who died May 13 in Capitola. She was 91.
Mrs. Goncalves and her husband owned a daily newspaper, O Telegrafo, in their native town of Horta on the Azorean island of Faial before moving to the United States in the early 1970s, following their college-bound daughter.
Mrs. Goncalves was a longtime parishioner of St. John’s Church in Felton. She lived in Smithwoods Mobile Home Estates in Felton for more than 31 years.
She is remembered as a happy person who had a talent for crocheting, knitting, painting and gardening and a sense of humor. She had the ability to construct a wall or sew beautifully for her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Mariza Leff, and her husband, Jeffrey, of Felton; sister, Lucilia Avila of Tracy; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Maria Goncalves.
The Mass will begin at 2 p.m. June 8 at St. John’s Catholic Church, 120 Russell Ave. in Felton. Burial will be private in Holy Cross Cemetery in Santa Cruz, beside her husband. Condolences can be shared online at www.pacificgardenschapel.com.
