Beginning Dec. 1, Monterey Bay Air Resources District (MBARD) will issue wintertime Spare the Air alerts for the San Lorenzo Valley in Santa Cruz County.

During these alerts, residents are encouraged to use cleaner heating sources, such as electricity, propane, natural gas or pellets. Notifications will be sent out by 3pm on days when conditions—like cold temperatures and temperature inversions trapping wood smoke—pose air quality concerns.

This voluntary program aims to reduce unhealthy air pollution during stagnant winter conditions, and runs from December through February.

For questions or to sign up for email alerts, visit mbard.org or call 831-647-9411.
