Santa Cruz County law enforcement agencies issued 301 cell phone tickets in one day as part of a crackdown on distracted driving.
The California Highway Patrol along with Scotts Valley, Watsonville, Capitola, University of California, Santa Cruz and Santa Cruz police departments issued 301 tickets for cell phone operation and texting on Tuesday, April 5.
The CHP issued 187 cell phone use tickets and 11 texting tickets – by far the most of any jurisdiction.
Scotts Valley officers issued 15 cell phone tickets and no texting tickets. Other agencies included Watsonville, 43 cell phone violations; UCSCPD, 20 cell phone violations and one texting violation; Santa Cruz, 13 cell phone violations and Capitola, 10 cell phone and 1 texting violation.
CHP is also holding forums at local high schools this month to signify April as Distracted Driver Awareness Month.
