The owner of a Scotts Valley motorcycle shop was arrested for drugs and gun possession charges on June 28 after a firearm was discharged from his property through several neighboring fences and through the glass door of a nearby home.
According to the Scotts Valley Police Department, James Davis, 44, and Beatrice Magleby, 40, were arrested June 28 after officers along with members of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office Gang Task Force served a search warrant on Davis’ business Scotts Valley Motorcycle Center.
According to a press-release from the department, officers had responded to a report from a home on nearby Cathy Lane at 8:18 p.m. on June 26 of a bullet that had shattered a glass door while two people were home. Officers collected the bullet and traced the trajectory to holes to inside the motorcycle business. According to police, Davis initially denied knowing that a firearm had gone off in the business, but later admitted that a possible altercation had occurred between some friends of his.
Investigators returned two days later with a search warrant for the store and a residence above the business. They found and seized two rifles, a shotgun, and four pistols, illegal fireworks, along with a small amount of drugs believed to be methamphetamine.
Davis was arrested for a violation of a protective order and possessing firearms in violation of a protective order and Magleby was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
No charges have been filed against Davis relating to affiliation with specific biker organizations; however it appears he supports the Ghost Mountain Riders and Hells Angels, according to Scotts Valley Police.
“There were definitely items consistent with support of the Ghost Mountain Riders and Hells Angels,” Scotts Valley Police Det. Brandon Polito said this week.
Polito said detectives have not yet determined who fired the shot, however, video surveillance equipment taken from the scene may lend a hand in determining who was there at the time of the incident.
The department has asked the Santa Cruz District Attorney’s Office to file nine additional counts of a prohibited person in possession of ammunition, additional weapons possession charges and fireworks possession charges. A further arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 10 at Santa Cruz County Superior Court.
In addition, according to court records, Davis faces charges of false imprisonment and battery that were filed with the Santa Cruz County Superior Court on June 25, a day before the alleged shot was fired from his store.
The motorcycle shop re-opened for business shortly after the arrest.
