The Mountain Dream 14-and-under softball team has earned three top three finishes in the three tournaments it has played this season. The San Lorenzo Valley-based youth team has turned three years of mishaps and mistakes into experience that has strengthened their backbone.
“This team has been together for a very long three years,” head coach Mike Olmsted said. “Where they used to make a bunch of mental errors, they are now very focused and earning their extra at bats and earning their quick outs. It is real fun to get to watch them as they improve.”
The team took second in their opening season tournament, the Thunder Thriller tournament in Los Gatos. The team finished 4-2 in the 40-team tournament that ran June 10 through 12. Mountain Dream went 2-1 in pool play and won two games in the final bracket before falling in the final game to the Almaden Lightning 4-3.
Next they played the Bagby Classic Tournament in Saratoga, where they took home the first place trophy on June 24.
Over the Fourth of July weekend, the team took third place in a B-league tournament at Carmel in the 7th Annual Carmel Classic. (Mountain Dream is a C-league team.)
“These girls are doing so well,” said team mom Michelle Cardoza. “They have worked so hard for this it is wonderful for them to experience some success.”
Teammates Shelly McDermott, Shayla Heffner, Lilly Fitzpatric, Rhiannon Boro, Jocelyn Jones, Jordan Martinez, Rachel Olmsted, Danielle Boro, Alli Poore, Alli Gudnason, Haylee Coker and Toni Cardoza make up the winning recipe that has become Mountain Dream 14-and-under this season.
