The puma sighting was reported at 4 a.m. near Fred Court and York Road, which is near the Granite Creek overpass off Scotts Valley Drive.
Just the night before, a Santa Cruz couple said they woke up to find their two pygmy goats slaughtered in a suspected mountain lion attack. Police said they are not sure if the animal spotted in Scotts Valley was responsible.
Also recently, two deer killings that appeared to be mountain lion attacks, near Pasatiempo Golf Course and on Graham Hill Road, were investigated by the California Department of Fish and Game.
It’s not rare to see mountain lions in the area. Police advise people who see them not to run, turn away or bend down. It is best to maintain eye contact, shout and try to appear larger.
Residents should be mindful of pets and children outside between dusk and dawn.
