The San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District board last week unanimously appointed Gail Levine, retired superintendent of the Bonny Doon Elementary School District, as a new school board trustee.
Levine replaces Kip Tellez, who announced his resignation Sept. 7 after 10 years as a trustee.
The board reported that Levine was the only eligible application received for the post by the Sept. 19 deadline. She was interviewed, then appointed at the board’s Sept. 21 meeting.
“Gail Levine is an outstanding addition to the SLV Board,” said SLV Supt. Laurie Bruton. “Her experience in education and willingness to serve the school community are a find for SLV.”
Levine has been a resident of the San Lorenzo Valley for 25 years. She retired as Bonny Doon superintendent in 2009. In her application, she wrote: “I attended public schools my entire life. My entire employment history has been in public schools. I believe in public schools and feel with my knowledge of education, extended relationships with families in SLV, I can be an asset to the continued improvement of the quality of education given to the SLV students.”
Levine will be sworn in Oct.5 on a provisional basis.
A special election could be held if a petition is filed by Nov.4 with Bruton’s office requesting the special vote for the board seat. Information about the petition process is available at the district office. If no petition is filed, the position becomes a regular appointment, up for reelection in 2018.
