Two more weeks to qualify for singing competition
The preliminary rounds of Malone’s Grille’s annual Scotts Valley Idol contest will take place for two more weeks before semifinals and finals Feb. 11.
Contestants can enter the contest Jan. 28 or Feb. 4, both Saturdays, to have a chance to qualify as one of 12 semifinalists who will sing Feb. 11 for a chance at a $300 first prize, $200 second prize or $100 third prize.
The competition runs from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Interim principal named at Brook Knoll
Scotts Valley Unified School District trustees have appointed Shar Santos as interim principal of Brook Knoll Elementary School for the remainder of the 2011-12 school year.
Santos will replace Principal Phillip Menchaca, who leaves for a new position in San Jose today, Jan. 27. Santos teaches fourth grade at Brook Knoll and has administrative and teaching credentials.
The district plans for her to transition from the classroom to the interim principal role Monday, Jan. 30. A meet and greet will be announced to Brook Knoll families.
A full recruitment for principal will take place in February and March for the start of the 2012-13 school year.
New art comes to Scotts Valley library
A new art exhibit, titled “Outside the Box: Abstractions in Art,” will be on display and ready for viewing Feb. 4 at the Scotts Valley Branch Library.
The showing is the second in the Art in the Library exhibit at the new library, 251 Kings Village Road.
Curated by program chair Val Peyser, it will feature works by Mike Bailey, Carol Bowie, Mike McClellan, James McElheron, Moto Ohtake, Eric Peterson, Beth Shields, Denise Shaw and Scotts Valley Middle School art students.
Media include paintings, photography and sculpture.
“The physical building of the new Scotts Valley Library lends itself so well to art, with its large, expansive walls and wonderful natural light,” Peyser said. “So it is very gratifying that the community is embracing Art in the Library so enthusiastically, and our county’s many experienced and respected artists are eager to participate.”

Scotts Valley group raises $5K for Special Olympics
The Scotts Valley Police Department teamed with Modern Woodmen of America to raise $5,000 for the Special Olympics of Northern California by recently bagging groceries at a local shop.
On Dec. 19, officers bagged at Scotts Valley Market and asked for donations, which were matched by Modern Woodmen.
