Cyclists take to local roads Saturday
Watch out for cyclists Saturday, July 25. Portions of highways 9, 35 and 236 will be occupied by large groups of riders taking part in the annual Santa Cruz Mountains Challenge bicycle tour. Organizers expect 500 riders.
The ride, sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club, will begin and end at Scotts Valley High School and traverse many of the mountainous roads at the north end of the county. Caltrans is asking motorists to cautiously share the road with cyclists.
The tour is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Candidate filing closing for November elections
People interested in running for any of the five special districts up for election on Nov. 3 must file a declaration of candidacy with the Santa Cruz County Elections Department by Aug. 7.
The only special district in the San Lorenzo Valley or Scotts Valley up for election is the Alba Park, Parkway and Recreation District, which has three directors’ terms expiring.
The Alba district is one of the smallest in the county with 65 registered voters.
