Watershed grants available
The San Lorenzo Valley Water District is accepting proposals for data collection and restoration grants through a 2012 grant program.
The district will consider funding up to three proposals of up to $3,500 each that address specific project areas regarding the Olympia Watershed property north of Felton, including invasive species control, monitoring sensitive species, initiating a volunteer program and documenting old mining equipment.
A new website, www.slvwd.com/watershed_projects.htm#OlyProjects illustrates ongoing restoration and data collection projects at the Olympia Watershed. The page provides maps, photos and background information that could help applicants in proposing projects that relate well.
The recently approved Watershed Management Plan for the Olympia Watershed, www.slvwd.com/watershed.htm#Part3 , is another resource for those pursuing a grant.
Applications must be received by 5 p.m. July 27.

Summer Bible school signups
Registration is under way for Operation Overboard, Dare to Go Deep with God, the summer Bible school program at Boulder Creek United Methodist Church at the corner of Mountain and Boulder streets in downtown Boulder Creek.
The school runs from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 6 to 10 for children entering kindergarten though fifth grade in the fall.
There is a $5 registration fee that increases to $10 after Aug. 5. A waiver can be obtained from the program’s director. Enrollment is limited.

Youth Shakespeare finds new venue
“Mother Goose Meets Dr. Seuss and Other Strange Encounters” will be performed by the Scotts Valley Performing Arts Youth Shakespeare Program at the recreation center at Skypark, 360 Kings Village Road, at 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, and at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 15.
This is the debut performance of the play by local author Trish Black Melehan.
The same group of young thespians will present William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church the following weekend, a show directed by Lisa Kirk-Williams.
The shows were previously at the Bethany University Theater, but with Olivet University leaving, the venue is no longer available.
 
Local youth set to perform
Hooked on Theater’s summer show, “The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up, Peter Pan,” by James Barrie, will open this weekend at San Lorenzo Valley High School’s Performing Arts Center, 7105 Highway 9, in Felton.
The summer musical has many young people playing the same roles, and features youngsters ages 6 to 17. They will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday from July 5 through July 15. Tickets are $15, while senior tickets cost $13 and children’s tickets cost $10.
The play is directed by Will Guilford, choreographed by Curtis Caudill, and gets musical direction from Jaleh Gerami, costume design from Lisa Holland and scenic design from Dustin Leonard.
Peter Pans include London Murray, Sara Johnson, Robert Jeffrey and Austin Whisler. Wendys are Nicole Holland, Kelsey Herberg, Lexie Warner and Maddie McMillan. Hook is played by Bobby Gerbode, Ryan Egbert, Will Parker and Jack Peddy.
