Scotts Valley to collect e-waste
Recycle old computers, TVs and other electronics during Scotts Valley’s seventh annual e-waste collection event.
Folks can drop off old electronics from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 12 on Erba Lane across from the Scotts Valley Fire Department.
Items accepted include computers, monitors, fax machines, printers, TVs, stereos, VCRs and cell phones. No appliances will be accepted.
In 2008, the city collected more than 30,000 pounds of electronics from 300 participants.

Siltanen swim season opens
Fall swim lessons will begin Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Siltanen Family Swim Center in Scotts Valley.
Scotts Valley native Heidi Sussman will lead three-week sessions put on by the city. Classes for all ages will run two days each week between 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. A group parent-and-baby class for children 6 months to 3 years old is also planned.

SV Senior Center looks for van drivers
The Scotts Valley Senior Center needs a few volunteers to drive seniors to medical appointments, on shopping errands and the like. Drivers drop off seniors at their destination, wait for them and then return them home.

Monning’s swordfish bill passes
A bill authored by state Assemblyman Bill Monning, D-Carmel, passed the state Legislature this week. The legislation asks the National Marine Fishery Service to immediately ban imports of foreign-caught swordfish that do not meet federal standards for marine mammal protection.
Monning’s bill, Assembly Joint Resolution 8, is designed to help domestic swordfish fishermen compete with foreign importers of swordfish whose practices are unregulated.
Barbecue for SV library
Live music, a silent auction and a no-host bar will all be part of the Scotts Valley Friends of the Library’s first Building for Books barbecue dinner.
Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the new Scotts Valley Library that will be constructed at the Scotts Valley Sports Center.
The barbecue dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Scotts Valley Community Center, 360 Kings Village Road.
Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.
