Locals compete on Food Network’s ‘Cupcake Wars’
Jeanette Fitzgearl and Lacey Thompson, owners of Cutesy Cupcakes in Scotts Valley, recently competed on Food Network’s hit show Cupcake Wars. The episode will first air Saturday, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. on Food Network.
 
Electric vehicle workshop offered
Ecology Action will host a free electric vehicle workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19. The workshop will include several local electric vehicle owners and provide an overview of EV’s. Lease options, rebates and incentives to help lower the cost of EV purchases will be discussed. A demonstration will also be set up where attendees can look at various EV’s including a Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt and a Smart ED vehicle. Radio man dies
Don Husing, the voice of KSCO, died from illness on Tuesday, Sept. 3. He was 71.
Born and raised in Oakdale, Mr. Husing came to KSCO in 1966 while serving in the U.S. Army at Ford Ord, where he wrote for the military’s Stars and Stripes magazine. KSCO’s first operating owner, Vernon Berlin, gave Mr. Husing three months off to study for his FCC First Phone license.  Mr. Husing then spent the next 47 years anchoring KSCO’s control room.  His duties at KSCO included broadcasting news, weather and traffic reports, producing and hosting the Hawaii Calls program, and co-hosting the Good Morning Monterey Bay commute show with Sleepy John Sandidge, Fred Riese, and Rosemary Chalmers. During Mr. Husing’s 47-year tenure, KSCO covered major area events, including the 1982 floods, the 1989 earthquake, and all of the area’s natural and man-made disasters. Among radio aficionados, Mr. Husing was known for his great sense of humor, love of Hawaiian music, and devotion to old time radio.
 
Lions golf tourney approaches
The Scotts Valley Host Lions Club will hold its annual Golf Tournament on September 27 at Valley Gardens Golf Course in Scotts Valley. There will be a 1 p.m. tee time followed by a barbecue. For information: www.svlions.org.
 
Free hayride in Ben Lomond
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will provide free pony cart rides, a petting zoo, face painting and balloon animals from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. Information about children’s Sunday School programs will be available and longtime Sunday School teacher Sari Mitchell will dress as Jesse the Cowgirl leading her miniature horse Mousey.
The church is located at 101 Riverside Ave. in Ben Lomond.
