County offers help for rural road residents
The Santa Cruz County Resource Conservation District will offer technical and financial assistance to help private road associations reduce erosion and improve water quality in local waterways.
A north county workshop will begin at 6 p.m. Dec. 2 at Little Creek House, 305 Swanton Road, in Davenport. A field tour is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 5 in Boulder Creek on Middleton Avenue.
Topics will include erosion control practices, managing roads after fire and recognizing signs of trouble.

Book fair opens at SLE
San Lorenzo Valley Elementary School’s annual book fair is open for business. The book fair opened Wednesday, Nov. 18, and will close Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The book fair is open from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the school’s multiuse room, 7155 Highway 9, in Felton.
Free CHP class for teen drivers
The California Highway Patrol is registering local young people for a free program to help new drivers.
The Start Smart Program helps teen drivers and their parents understand how poor choices behind the wheel can touch the lives of many people. Information on defensive driving, traffic laws, the dynamics of traffic collisions, avoiding collisions and DUI awareness will be part of the class.
The class will begin at 6 p.m. Dec. 22 at the CHP office in Aptos, 10395 Soquel Drive.

Council approves sidewalk fix
The Scotts Valley City Council approved a $1,400 recommendation from the local Americans with Disabilities Act subcommittee at the Wednesday, Nov. 18, meeting to make a sidewalk area that connects The Vineyards neighborhood to Vine Hill School Road more accessible to people with disabilities.
The council is still considering a second recommendation by the subcommittee.
