Fire in the Heart
On March 5th, 2016, Cabrillo College Theatre Arts presents “Fire in the Heart.” The show features 20 local and national artists who have used the performing arts in their own lives to address trauma and recovery, including substance abuse, violence and major health issues. “Fire in the Heart” shows how the arts can help us process, heal, and transcend traumatic events, whether they occur in our own lives or the lives of others, while entertaining and enriching us at the same time.
Using a powerful, innovative combination of storytelling, music, film, dance and poetry to explore how our inner lives, stimulated by creativity, become a catalyst not just for personal healing, but for strengthening community resilience and sense of service, even as we are asked to bear the unbearable. An abbreviated production was first created for the California Women’s Conference in 2014, with the current expanded show directed by Deborah Allen and Delores Burgess.
Performers include national recording artists gospel singer Delores Burgess, hip-hop artists The Luminaries and Chris and Gina Rene, classical cellist Lisa Lancaster, best-selling author Tom North, actors and filmmakers Deborah Allen, Brittney Buffo, and Amy Pine, poet Becca Hunnicutt, Rabbi Eli Cohen and Nigerian-born opera singer Akindele Bankole.
Designed as a way for the community to come together to experience the arts as a powerful transformative lifeline, “Fire in the Heart” brings together a wonderful group of local sponsors, including Janus Substance Abuse Treatment Center, Monarch Services (formerly Women’s Crisis Support), Dignity Health-Dominican Hospital, Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, Chadeish Yameinu Jewish Renewal of Santa Cruz, Peace United Church of Christ, Capitola Village Sea Glass, Seacliff Inn, JANE-the movie, and KSCO radio.
Affiliate sponsors include WomenCARE, SurvivorsHealingCenter, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Performing Arts, The Art Factory, SC Marriage and Family Therapists, United Way, Rising International, Nickelodeon Theatres, Lighthouse Bank, Twin Lakes Church, California Highway Patrol, and the Women’s Council of Realtors.
“There is a deep need for an outlet for healing for all that experience trauma. Being able to offer our community art as a gateway to healing could be life-changing for many,” said Kalyne Foster, of Monarch Services. “Empowering individuals, families, and our communities to take action against violence and abuse” she believes is the issue.
