Highway 9 resurfacing to start Sunday night
Cal Trans has announced that crews will resurface a two-mile stretch of Highway 9, from Russell Avenue to Glen Arbor Bridge by Coon Heights in Felton, starting Sunday night, Oct. 10.
One-way traffic control with flaggers will be in place overnight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and from midnight to 6 a.m. Friday.
Traffic delays of 15 to 20 minutes are expected.
Valley Slurry Seal Inc. of West Sacramento is the contractor for the $393,000 job.

Time to recycle tires, appliances
The city of Scotts Valley will host a tire and appliance recycling collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, in the parking lot across from the Erba Lane Fire Station, 7 Erba Lane.
Residents can drop off refrigerators, clothes washers and dryers, water heaters and other metal appliances free of charge. Scrap metal and old tires will also be accepted. No TVs, computers or furniture are permitted. Metal from appliances will be shredded, melted and made into new metal products. Collected tires will be ground into small pieces and be recycled into rubber playground surfaces and floor mats.

Watershed management to be discussed
San Lorenzo Valley Water District seeks input regarding the future of the district’s 250-acre Olympia Watershed property at a public meeting at
7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the Zayante Fire House, 7700 E. Zayante Road, in Felton.
The district invites people to share ideas and recommendations for how the Olympia Watershed will be managed, protected and used by visitors.
The property has been degraded over the years by illegal recreational use, invasive species and mining. Some areas are home to the extremely rare sand parkland community.
The meeting will be led by the firm Design, Community & Environment. Refreshments will be served.

Columbine victim’s program arrives in Scotts Valley
Scotts Valley High School will host a “Rachel’s Challenge” assembly for the community from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the high school gymnasium, 555 Glenwood Drive, in Scotts Valley.
The assembly will feature a multimedia, interactive presentation created by the father of Rachel Joy Scott, the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting in 1999. Rachel’s Challenge is to create a safe learning environment and to train people to make permanent positive changes in their lives.
The assembly is free and open to the public.
