Huge book sale for libraries
The 2010 Friends of Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ two-day civic auditorium book and media sale is next weekend.
The sale is the largest not-for-profit book sale in the Monterey Bay Area. Items sell for $1.50 per pound.
The Friends’ members-only preview sale will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 12. Nonmembers can join for $15 for seniors and students, $20 for adults or $30 for couples.
The free-admission public sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13, with deals throughout the day.

SLV school board member appointed
Laura Dolson was provisionally appointed to the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District board of trustees on Oct. 27.
The appointment will become final unless at least 5 percent of registered voters in the district file a petition with the Santa Cruz County Superintendent of Schools.
The appointment followed the resignation of Susan Weber in September.
Backyard burn season opens in December
Cal Fire has announced that backyard burning will be allowed beginning Dec. 1 in Santa Cruz County. Backyard burning is using an outdoor fire to dispose of natural vegetation from the yard surrounding a home.

Bonny Doon school board to fill vacancy
The Bonny Doon Union School District board will appoint a new board member following the resignation of Lisa Palm.
Bonny Doon residents interested in the seat should complete a candidate information sheet, available at the school office, 1492 Pine Flat Road.
The deadline to apply is Nov. 23. The appointment is for two years.
The board invites anyone who is interested to attend a board meeting at 5 p.m. Nov. 10 in Room 10 at the school.

Controlled burn in Big Basin
The California Department of Parks and Recreation will ignite a 319-acre prescribed burn at Big Basin State Park that will start Nov. 5 and continue for the next two weeks, as conditions allow. It is expected that this fire will continue to burn until extinguished by winter rains.
This burn is being conducted to reduce the threat of wildfire and to enhance natural resources within the park, according to the state parks department. The Meteor and Hollow Tree trails from the North Escape Road to Middle Ridge Fire Road will be closed during the burn. Middle Ridge and Johanson roads may also be closed for a few days.
