Angelou visit rescheduled
Maya Angelou’s appearance at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, scheduled for Feb.12, has been rescheduled. The award-winning author has been asked to attend the White House to receive this year’s Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama on national television.
Instead, Angelou will speak in Santa Cruz at 8 p.m. March 18.
The visit is in conjunction with University of California, Santa Cruz, and the Friends of Santa Cruz Public Libraries.
Tickets cost $35 to $65 and are available at www.santacruztickets.com. Tickets bought for the Feb. 12 appearance will be honored March 18 or can be returned for a refund no later than Feb. 12 at the Civic Box Office, 307 Church St., in Santa Cruz.
Kindergarten registration opens in Bonny Doon
Parents of children who will be 5 years old by Dec. 2 can now register their students for kindergarten at Bonny Doon School.
A birth certificate, immunization records and an enrollment form are required. The form can be found at the school office, 1492 Pine Flat Road, in Bonny Doon.
Parents can call for an appointment to visit a kindergarten classroom.

Police to hold poker tournament for Special Olympics
A Texas Hold ’Em tournament to benefit Special Olympics of Northern California is scheduled for Feb. 18 at Bruno’s Barbecue in Scotts Valley. Ninety seats are available for an initial $60 buy-in.
Doors open at 6 p.m., and the tournament will run from 7 to 10:30 p.m., with a no-host bar and free appetizers. The top three players will win prizes.

Supervisor named chairman of board
Santa Cruz County Supervisor Mark Stone has been voted in as the Board of Supervisors chairman for 2011.
Stone, who has represented the San Lorenzo Valley, Scotts Valley and part of Santa Cruz for seven years, last served as the board chaimanr in 2006. As chairman, he will run board meetings.

County fair poster contest opens
High school and college students are invited to submit artwork online for the annual Santa Cruz County Fair poster contest.
Students can turn this year’s theme, “Dancing with the Steers for 200 Years,” into a piece of original art used to promote the fair.
The winner receives $100 and passes to the 2011 fair. The deadline is Jan. 31.

Time to apply for Community Foundation grants
Groups that want to apply to the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County for a grant in 2011 can find an application, information and help at www.cfscc.org/grants.
The deadline to apply is Feb. 23.
Community grants, ranging from $5,000 to $35,000, are awarded competitively for programs and services that benefit county residents. About $500,000 is expected to be awarded in 2011.

Beachfront project seeks artists
An informal question and answer session to explain the “Call to artists” for the Twin Lakes Beachfront public art project is 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Simpkins Family Swim Center Community, Room A, 979 17th Ave., in Santa Cruz.

Monning named water champion
Clean Water Action, a water lobbyist group, awarded Assemblyman Bill Monning, D-Carmel, its “Clean Water Champion” award to recognize his leadership on water and environmental issues during the 2009-10 legislative session. Monning received a score of 100 percent on Clean Water Action’s list of 20 bills considered in the 2009-10 legislative session and was one of 22 members of the Legislature given this award.
