Scotts Valley Unified School District mailed out letters to all district households announcing its 2009-10 free and reduced-priced meal program for students.
Households must complete the application included with the letter or pick up the application at the principal’s office of the child’s school.
Eligibility for free school lunches depends on the household’s annual income or if the child qualifies for federal or state aid under food stamp or similar programs.
Quit-smoking workshop in Ben Lomond
Balance Health of Ben Lomond is offering a workshop titled “Stop Smoking for Good and Save Some Money” from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 1. The cost is $50.
The class is at Balance Health, 231 Main St., Ste. A, in Ben Lomond.
The workshop will help smokers set a “quit date” and teach them how to set up support to help them achieve their goals, according to Dr. Amy Solomon.

Monning to hold office hours and forum in Felton
State Assemblyman Bill Monning will host office hours in Felton from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Mountain Community Resources, 6134 Highway 9, in Felton. Fifteen-minute appointments are available by reservation only by calling 425-1503.
Then Monning will cross Highway 9 to the Felton Community Hall, 6191 Highway 9, where he will be the featured guest in a discussion with the public about environmental concerns. The meeting will last from 1 to 3 p.m. The Valley Women’s Club Environmental Committee is sponsoring the discussion.
SV fireworks a success
More than 3,100 tickets were sold to the Fourth of July fireworks show at Skypark, netting about $14,400 for Scotts Valley Advocates, the nonprofit organization set up to manage the annual fundraiser for the city.
“The fireworks are such a great community event,” said Patty Malone, owner of Malone’s Grande Grille and group member. “I don’t think people realize it’s a fundraiser.”
The fireworks generally net about $17,000 annually. The money helps pay for improvements at local parks; this year, the funds will go toward a second gazebo at Skypark.
Supervisor’s office hours resume
Santa Cruz County Supervisor Mark Stone will resume regular open office hours starting next week.
• 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesdays at the Sheriff’s Community Service Center, 6060 Graham Hill Road, Felton.
• 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays at the San Lorenzo Valley History Museum, 12647 Highway 9, Boulder Creek.
• 5 to 6 p.m. every third Wednesday at the Scotts Valley City Council Chambers, One Civic Center Drive.
