SVPD cites three businesses, honors 11 in tobacco decoy operation
In an effort to help reduce the use of and illegal sale of tobacco products to minors, the Scotts Valley Police Department conducted a Minor Decoy Tobacco Sales Operation on March 5.
SVPD investigators teamed up with a 16-year-old student to make cigarette sales compliance checks at 11 convenience stores/gas stations throughout the city.
If the clerks properly asked for IDs, checked them to see if they were valid and refused to sell, they received a congratulatory certificate and a big “thank you” from the department.
If they failed and sold the cigarettes to the minor, the clerk was arrested and released with a citation. The business owner may also be fined and additional action may be taken against their license to sell tobacco products.
Out of the 11 locations, three failed and sold cigarettes to the minor. The clerks cited were employed at the following businesses: 76 Gas, Village Bottle Shop, and Discount Smoke Shop.
The department recognized clerks at Chevron, Hacienda Shell, Valero, Quik Stop, Leo’s U Save Liquors, Mount Hermon Shell, Scotts Valley Gas, and 7-Eleven for refusing to sell tobacco products to a minor.
