Mountain Community Theater presents ‘The Spitfire Grill’
Mountain Community Theater will present the musical drama “The Spitfire Grill” from March 6 through April 5 at Park Hall, 9400 Mill St. in Ben Lomond.
The production, co-directed by Greg Fritsch and Cathy D. Warner with music director Don Atkins, tells a story of perseverance and redemption set in a small Wisconsin town. Percy, a convicted murderer on parole, and Hannah, the diner’s owner, navigate secrets, friendship and the town’s revival in this powerful tale of love, family and community. “The Spitfire Grill” is based on the film by Lee David Zlotoff, with music and book by James Valcq and lyrics and book by Fred Alley.
Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm, with Sunday matinees at 2pm. Opening Night is March 6, followed by a Community Night on March 7 with discounted tickets and a post-show talkback on March 22. Tickets are available at mctshows.org.
Spotlight Awards open for nominations
Santa Cruz County Arts Commission is accepting nominations for its annual Spotlight Award, which honors local artists whose work demonstrates excellence and creativity but has not yet received widespread recognition. The award is open to emerging artists and those discovering their artistic voice later in life.
One award will be given in each of three categories: visual art, performing arts and literary arts. Nominees must live in Santa Cruz County and have completed work recognized for its innovation, individuality or artistic promise.
Letters of nomination, limited to two pages, must include the artist’s contact information, a brief description of the nominator’s relationship to the artist, and reasons for the nomination. Bishop to visit St. Andrew’s for 125th anniversary celebration
On Sunday, March 15, the Right Reverend Lucinda Ashby, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of El Camino Real, will visit St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ben Lomond.
Ashby will preach, preside at Holy Communion (all are welcome to receive the sacrament), confirm several persons in their Christian faith, and participate in open discussion over lunch following the service. Worship begins at 10am.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church was dedicated in 1901, making this its 125th year and possibly the oldest church in the San Lorenzo Valley in continuous service in the same denomination/affiliation. St. Andrew’s will be offering several special celebratory events this year for the community to get to know the church, located at the corner of Glen Arbor and Riverside Avenue, in the center of Ben Lomond.

Scotts Valley Wellness Walk set for March 28
Initiated by a Scotts Valley High School senior and supported by the Scotts Valley Unified School District, the Scotts Valley Wellness Walk on Saturday, March 28, at 10:30am will serve as a community-wide event and fundraiser to keep the SVHS Wellness Center open as grant funding is coming to a close.
This first-time event features a pre-walk rally at 10am, two fully supported routes complete with water, snacks and activities. The event concludes with a post-walk wellness festival from 12-3pm at SVHS for all ages with a bounce house, lawn games, a silent auction, musical performances, athletic demonstrations (yoga and martial arts), information booths, food trucks and tours of the SVHS Wellness Center.
