Floyd Protests in Felton

Protests erupted throughout the country in response to the killing of George Floyd on May 25th.  Unrest against racist violence in the police force have ranged from peaceful to riots and looting throughout United States, and have even taken place in the UK, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Germany, and Denmark.  While this worldwide phenomenon develops, it’s also occurring across Santa Cruz County.  We had our own moment in the spotlight, as a photo of the Santa Cruz City Police Chief, Andy Mills, kneeling during a protest has gone viral.  Many groups of protestors have gathered these past few days at the clock tower in Santa Cruz, marched down Pacific Avenue, Cedar, Soquel, and Water Streets.  Protests have moved into our valley as well.  On May 31st, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., a march took place from the Felton Covered Bridge Park to the intersection of Highway 9 and Graham Hill Road.  Look for an article in next week’s edition for further coverage.

Covid 19 Testing

Sew, You Want to Help?

When the shelter in place order was issued, many community members had to largely curtail their ambitions for the coming months. However, two highly ambitious Scotts Valley locals saw this grand intermission as the time to get busy contributing to our community.  Julie Ebert and Lori Rubin, have rolled up their shirt sleeves and setup battle stations with card tables, countertops, and carports to sew masks for at risk populations in our community.  So far, they’ve churned out over 1,000 masks and their plans don’t stop there.  They’ve donated masks to (hang in there, it’s a long list) Visiting Angels, Brookdale Scotts Valley, Driftwood Health Care, Lincoln Glen Manor, Hospice of Santa Cruz County, La Posada Santa Cruz, San Lorenzo Park Apartments, Santa Cruz Support Living, Life Span Cares, Westwind Memory Care, Santa Cruz Post Acute, Elizabeth Oaks Apartments, and El Dorado Center.

Update On SLVWD: Discussing the LIRA Program

I chatted with Jim Mosher, from the Friends of the San Lorenzo Valley Water District, to catch up on the latest SLVWD meeting. This past April, when the Press Banner checked in, the SLVWD was debating whether to move forward with a five percent rate increase, approved before the COVID-19 Emergency.  The Friends had proposed keeping the rate increase, to maintain the infrastructure of the water district, but also promoted a new program, for low income rate payers. On May 7th, the SLVWD gathered again (remotely) to further discuss these proposals.

Boys and Girls Clubs’ Essential Worker Childcare

If the idiom, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder,” is correct, our hearts are experiencing extraordinary heights of fondness.  Especially towards teachers and childcare workers, since schools and daycares were closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.  While it appears that our community will continue to grow that appreciation in the months to come, the Boys and Girls Club has recently begun to alleviate the overwhelming need for childcare in Santa Cruz County. Across the county, clubhouses have begun to accept the children of essential workers for a full day program (8 a.m.-6 p.m.) from Monday through Friday.
