The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter (SCCAS) serves the county and city of Santa Cruz and the cities of Scotts Valley and Watsonville. They are separate from the private, non-profit Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SCPA) in Santa Cruz which each year places about 800 unwanted dogs and cats into new homes. They also educate people on humane treatment of animals and operate a pet food bank.
Nine seabirds covered in oil were found on beaches between Monterey and Santa Cruz last December. The birds were given to the SPCA of Monterey County, Native Animal Rescue and International Bird Rescue for treatment.
The Scotts Valley Police Department has recently received several reports of residential and commercial burglaries throughout the city of Scotts Valley. Thieves have gained access into unlocked vehicles and unlocked garage doors and have stolen personal property including: bicycles, cash, firearms and personal electronics.
