California declares State Tax Season open
The Franchise Tax Board announced it is accepting 2015 state tax returns for a filing season that extends through April 18, three days beyond the traditional deadline because of a federal holiday.
Free tax program helps taxpayers
The California State Board of Equalization is offering a free all-day tax preparation class. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA is also known as the Free Income Tax Preparation and Family Resource Fair events) is hosted by the Internal Revenue Service, Franchise Tax Board, Board of Equalization, local colleges and elected officials throughout tax season.

Proposed Felton bike park begins environmental study
On Saturday, January 23rd, from 1:00–3:00 p.m., Mt.Hermon hosted an informational question and answer program at the Felton Community Hall. They showed a sophisticated slide show about their proposed plans for the property's development called the Felton Meadow/Velocity Bike Park. The members of the community filled the meeting hall.
El Nino rain brings dangerous driving conditions
In California we are grateful for rain, but if we have to drive during an El Nino downpour, we may not be so pleased with the high intensity of water brought by the storm system. Menacing heavy rains and winds create driving conditions that can increase the opportunities for accidents to occur.
How Governor Jerry Brown wants to spend California Tax Dollars
On January 7 Governor Jerry Brown proposed a $122.6 billion state budget. Spending was increased for education, health care, state infrastructure, debt pay down and increase the state’s rainy day fund to $8 billion. "Relative to budgets of the past, this budget is in good shape," Brown said of his 2016-17 spending plan. "We also ought to look at what's the capacity of the state, and what's the taxpayer willingness to spend more."
Gas Pump Credit Card Skimmer
The Scotts Valley Police Department recovered a credit card "skimming" device from a gas pump at a local service station on Mt. Hermon Road. The device was located inside the pump by a technician doing routine maintenance.
First District town hall meeting scheduled
On Tuesday, January 19, at 5:30 .p.m. to 6:30 p.m., County Supervisor John Leopold will be holding a neighborhood town hall for the ScottsValley, Granite Creek, and HappyValley neighborhoods in the First District east of Highway 17. The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss a broad range of issues within Santa CruzCounty including criminal justice, healthcare, transportation, and economic development.
