New legislation to regulate the Cannabis Industry to be effective on January 1

New tax laws, effective January 1, 2016, enhance the California State Board of Equalization’s ability to protect taxpayers and allow for ongoing administration of taxes that help pay for important state and local services such a public safety, education, and transportation.

Manage your earthquakes

At 5:04 p.m., on October 17, 1989, the 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake struck the Santa CruzMountains causing landslides and heavy property damage. In Oakland, a freeway was partially collapsed. A portion of the San FranciscoBayBridge failed. The shock was responsible for 63 deaths and nearly 4,000 injuries in the San FranciscoBay area and in the Santa CruzMountains.

Scotts Valley Sports Complex

The Scotts Valley Sports Complex volunteer organization announced it has secured funding and commitments totaling more than $1 million toward the first phase of the ScottsValleyHigh School sports complex. Scotts Valley Sports Complex, in partnership with the ScottsValleyUnifiedSchool District and SVHS Falcon Club, will use the funds to begin construction of an all weather track, turf playing field, bleacher seating, press box, and storage. The first phase will total nearly $5 million, while the entire sports complex, including the aquatic center, is expected to total nearly $10 million.

Santa CruzCounty is an amazing place! We have a memorial to the three Hawaiian princes who in 1885 taught Santa Cruzians how to surf; we have a Hawaiian radio station in Watsonville; and the Tiki Kings Ukelele Store in Felton. Now we also have a hula school called “Mehana Pa Olapa Kahiko” or, in English, “The Ladies of Mehana.”

Public help leads to arrest of Santa Cruz Burglar

Thanks to a tip from the public, a home burglary suspect, Efrain Berulas, 49, was arrested by the Santa Cruz Police Department. On December 5, at approximately 6:15 p.m., Berulas was caught by video surveillance inside of the victims’ home. When the victims returned home the next day, they discovered the home had been burglarized. The suspect took electronics and tools while ransacking the home. The arrest was made on Thursday December 10, at approximately 11:00 a.m. Berulas was taken into custody without incident.

Computer Science Education Week at Brook Knoll Elementary

The week of December 7 through 11 saw the 3rd annual “Hour of Code.” School kids worldwide participated in this global event in more than 180 countries, according to the web site https.code.org.
