As the new school year kicks off next week, the four schools of the Scotts Valley Unified School District will welcome back not only their students, but also six teachers whose jobs could have been lost to budget cuts.

Elementary schools in Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley are offering a new grade level for the first time in more than 100 years. But so far, few students have signed up.

A report by the Wall Street Journal outlining the growing tension between scooter riders and skateboarders in skate parks in America featured Scotts Valley's skate park. The article "Who's Swell on Wheels? In Turf Tussle, Die-Hard Skateboarders Diss Scooters," was found on the front page of the Saturday/Sunday Aug. 18-19 edition of the WSJ. 

An early-morning burglary was interrupted by the manager of a Scotts Valley pizza restaurant, but the burglar escaped through a back window.
