Life, it seems, is still good at 100. Elaine Slighte celebrated her 100th year of clean living with more than 80 friends and relatives Saturday, July 16, at the clubhouse in Spring Lakes Mobile Home Park in Scotts Valley.

Former Ben Lomond shop owner Murial Smith-Bockius died July 10 at Flors Guest Home in Santa Cruz following a four-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 88.

A changing of the guard took place July 1 at the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Cruz office as Capt. Matt Olson officially took over command of the post.

Mormon ‘pioneers’ hit the trails

On Thursday, July 28, about 100 people — 58 youths between the ages of 12 and 18 and 46 adults — donned pioneer-style attire and set off on trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains to replicate a trek taken by their spiritual ancestors.
