Eating right important for seniors

At every age, a person’s taste buds change, from a child’s love of sweets to an adult’s preference for more complex flavors. As men and women reach retirement age and beyond, though, the senses of taste and smell may diminish, and some may lean too heavily on salt or sugar for flavor.

BC Fire honors retired firefighters

Richard Hirschfeld Jan. 13, 1925 – April 25, 2011

A graveside service was conducted May 6 in Felton Cemetery for Richard Hirschfeld, a former Scotts Valley resident, who died April 25 at his home in Lake Oswego, Ore. He was 87.

Prolific Boulder Creek filmmaker Bob Gliner was disenchanted by the negative picture painted by the 2010 documentary “Waiting for Superman.” The critically acclaimed film directed by Davis Guggenheim showed one side of the plight of public education in the United States, including some of the vast problems in inner-city schools in Washington, D.C.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 6, in Morgan Hill to honor longtime Boulder Creek resident Pamela Kay Burrows Zin, who died April 25 in Los Gatos. She was 66.

BMW veers off road

Scotts Valley firefighters helped a woman to safety after she crashed her BMW at Glenwood Drive by Walpole Lane. She appeared to be unharmed after going off the road on Monday, May 2.
