One way to get in shape during the summer is to train for a race. Santa Cruz County has a wealth of options during the summer and early fall. The past several years have seen an increase in the popularity of triathlons and endurance races all across the state, and our area is prime location for these types of races.

A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, in Scotts Valley to remember former Ben Lomond resident Don Higgins. The celebration and barbecue will be at the Scotts Valley Community Center, 360 Kings Village Road, in Scotts Valley. Mr. Higgins was born Aug. 3, 1943, and died Aug. 14, 2012. In an effort to promote the safety and security of the students of Scotts Valley’s schools, the Scotts Valley City Council — absent councilmembers Dene Bustichi and Stephany Aguilar — voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve a one-year trial run with Silicon Valley-based Resiligence Inc. for the TipNow service.

Monet Salon and Spa will sponsor a Spa Day for four breast cancer survivors. Residents are invited to write an essay to nominate a breast cancer survivor to receive a facial massage, manicure, pedicure, hairstyling and makeup.
