The valley will see consolidated bus routes and reduced services come September after Metro board members approved 10 percent in cuts to balance its scant budget last week. The Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District board members also declared a fiscal emergency and passed a two-year budget that relies heavily on reserves at their regular monthly meeting Friday, June 25.

The San Lorenzo Valley Water District on Wednesday refused to release a letter that it had cited Monday as the reason it decided to pay ex-director Terry Vierra’s legal bills for two years.

Many local residents have by now noticed the recent “base camp” for the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) that suddenly appeared on the former Sky Park Airport early last week. The “base camp” is in response to the recent and dramatically increasing wildfire threat, according to PG&E.  The “base camp” looks like a military outpost with temporary canvas buildings, klieg lights and a huge fleet of Davey Tree trucks. Scotts Valley Police Chief Steve Walpole seems to be following the recommendations of several studies finding that woman police officers improve the overall performance and reduce complaints of police violence in major cities across the country. After several years of turnover and vacancies in the Scotts Valley Police Department, the department is now fully staffed with the addition of two new female police officers: Officer Meredith Roberts and Officer Pascal Wowak.
