Richard “Dick” Beardsley June 30, 1938 — April 29, 2012

Services will be May 27 for longtime Ben Lomond resident Dick Beardsley, who died at his home April 29 after battling diabetes and leukemia for more than 10 years. He was 73.

Remembering Annette Marcum

More than 500 people packed the halls of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Boulder Creek on a rainy Saturday, Feb. 8 afternoon to celebrate the life of San Lorenzo Valley icon Annette Marcum. Marcum, who founded the nonprofit aid organization Valley Churches United Missions in 1982, passed away in January at the age of 75 after a long illness. The celebration included musical selections, as well as speakers such as Supervisor Bruce McPherson and Bishop Richard Garcia.

Students address SV council over plastic bag concerns

The controversy over single-use plastic bags arrived in Scotts Valley last week, as a group of 5thgrade students — along with parents, educators, and members of the Santa Cruz County environmentalist community — addressed the Scotts Valley City Council at its meeting about the topic.

UPDATE: Assault on teen deemed a hoax

UPDATE, Thursday, March 20: The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office have determined that the report that a 15-year-old girl was assaulted while walking home from school was a hoax. After completing an interview with the teen victim, she recanted her previous story due to inconsistencies.
