As the brisk winter season gets into full force, California State Parks will use the off-peak time to pinch pennies anywhere and everywhere — all in the effort to cut at least $14 million from its budget this fiscal year.

It was more than two years ago that Mindy Gillen found what she touts as the perfect site for a preschool program — a small church in Felton on a peaceful corner lot. 

Services were conducted last week for Lina M. Locatelli of Boulder Creek, who died Nov. 4 at home at the age of 94.

Construction workers struck a high-pressure natural gas line while sinking fence posts along the driveway of the house on the corner of Quail Hollow Road and Marion Avenue in Ben Lomond. The gas leak was pinpointed at the spot between the nose of a passing school bus and the mailbox at the end of the driveway in the photograph above. The Zayante Fire Department responded, at first turning traffic away, but then allowing it to pass after limiting gas flow as much as they could while waiting for Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
