Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter
The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter (SCCAS) serves the county and city of Santa Cruz and the cities of Scotts Valley and Watsonville. They are separate from the private, non-profit Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SCPA) in Santa Cruz which each year places about 800 unwanted dogs and cats into new homes. They also educate people on humane treatment of animals and operate a pet food bank.

The search for Maddy

On July 27, the Santa Cruz Police Department concluded their search for Madyson “Maddy” Middleton. At approximately 7:55 p.m., detectives located the body of a child matching Maddy’s description. It was found in a dumpster at the Tannery Arts Center complex at 1030 River Street. The official cause and manner of death will be determined at a pending autopsy by the Santa Cruz County Coroner. As of July 29, that information had not been made public.

Local cleanup joins worldwide effort

The annual San Lorenzo Valley River and Road Cleanup has been combined with the worldwide Coastal Cleanup, set for Sept. 19.

Taking in the Damage

Late August 18th, I finished my latest article, “A Perfect Storm for Fire.”  Throughout that Tuesday, I gained more motivation for the piece, as smoke gradually obscured our valley from my window.  At the time, the fires throughout the county seemed manageable.  Robert Gray, the Felton Fire Protection District Chief assured, “We’ve sent assistance to neighboring agencies, but in Felton we’ve had no fires.  We’ve just chased a few fallen trees and power lines.” However, concern for air quality soon paled in comparison with the Tuesday night evacuations of all Boulder Creek residents.  Countless other neighborhoods soon followed.
