The homeless problem in Santa Cruz is no secret. Travel down Pacific Avenue or look near the Clock Tower, and you’ll see that the moderate weather and accessible resources create a welcoming environment for the less fortunate—so much so, that the City of Santa Cruz just hired Brooke Newman to serve in the city’s newly created role of Homeless Response Manager (more on her in a later edition).

Boulder Creek Fire District parcel tax

The residents of the Boulder Creek Fire Protection District are invited to "Chat with the Chief," an informational coffee at the Boulder Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 13230 Highway 9, Boulder Creek, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7 to get information about Measure N,  on the Nov. 8 ballots of voters in the district.

Bypass around Scotts Valley rockslide in place

Residents of Nelson Road, essentially stranded since the March 21 rockslide that buried the roadway and cut off 33 homes, celebrated the completion and opening of a temporary bypass roadway 12 days later on the evening of April 2.

County offers limited amnesty for unpermitted dwellings, if certified as safe

The County Planning Department knows there are hundreds of unpermitted dwellings throughout the unincorporated areas of Santa Cruz County, especially up and down the San Lorenzo Valley. Aimed at insuring a basic level of health and fire safety in these living spaces, the county has rolled out a new “Limited Immunity Amnesty Program,” called the Safe Structures Program, to improve the safety of both residents and neighbors of these “not-entirely-legal” residential spaces, while trying to avoid the dreaded “Red Tag” that puts people out of much needed affordable housing.
