The Press-Banner has hired two new reporters to fill a vacancy left by the departure of reporter Michelle Camerlingo early this month.
The paper hired Joe Shreve, 27, of Felton, and Nathan Beck, 31, of Scotts Valley, to fill news and sports-writer positions at the paper.
“Joe and Nathan are both local guys who know Scotts Valley and the San Lorenzo Valley inside and out,” Editor Peter Burke said. “The way they go about telling stories reflects their knowledge of the area, and that’s exactly what we look for in our new reporters.”
Shreve, a 2002 San Lorenzo Valley High School graduate, is the new Press-Banner news reporter. He grew up in Felton and attended San Jose State University, before transferring to California State University, Humboldt in 2005. After working on The Spartan Daily newspaper at San Jose State and The Lumberjack at Humboldt, he graduated with a degree in journalism and mass communication in 2007.
Shreve enjoys hiking, photography and traveling and volunteers with the youth group at Felton Presbyterian Church.
Beck will write sports and feature stories for the Press-Banner.
One of nine children, Beck was born and raised in Mount Hermon and graduated from San Lorenzo Valley High School in 1997. He joined the Army from 1997 to 2001 and has worked in website design, car sales and other fields since then.
A lifelong sports player and fan, he coached the freshman football team at San Lorenzo Valley High for seven years.
His younger brother, Jordan Beck, played for the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL.
Beck is married to Jessica Beck, an intensive-care unit nurse in San Jose, and has three children, including 6-week-old Isaac.
Shreve can be reached by e-mail at jo*@*********er.com, and Beck at na****@*********er.com. The Press-Banner office phone line is 438-2500.
