Douglas Landauer
Nov. 15, 1952 to April 17, 2015
Senior software engineer, nature lover, and beloved husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend, Douglas Alfred Landauer, passed away April 17, 2015, after complications following a heart attack. He was 62.
Born November 15, 1952, in Pasadena, California, Doug was the third of four sons of Donald Landauer and Dr. Lyndall Baker Landauer. The Landauers were a family of sailors, even building a trimaran in the yard of their Pasadena home, which they sailed frequently to Catalina and along the Southern California coast.
The family also enjoyed summer trips to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, instilling in Doug a lifelong interest in the great outdoors.
An exceptionally bright student, Doug continued the family tradition of excelling in math. While still in high school at Blair High School in Pasadena in the late 1960s, Doug often went to the UCLA computer lab with his oldest brother Chris and worked on the coding of the ARPANET, early precursor to what eventually became the World Wide Web.
High school proved beneath Doug’s intellectual capacity; he left early to enroll at UCLA at age 16. He graduated UCLA in 1973 with a B.A. in mathematics and computer science.
A self-described “neophile,” Doug pursued his passion for programming and systems for over four decades, working at Interactive Systems, Sun Microsystems, Apple, IBM, and Google, among others. His most recent position was with Sumo Logic in Redwood City, a job he greatly enjoyed.
In May 1982, Doug married Deborah (Doughty) Landauer, whom he met through mutual friends in Hollywood. They both loved the natural beauty of Santa Cruz County, and made their home in the forested sand hills of Ben Lomond.
During 33 years of marriage, Doug and Deborah enjoyed outdoor adventures in many beautiful places in the mountains, beaches, and deserts all over California, Montana, Utah, New Mexico, Kauai, Washington, as well as trips to Europe and Mexico.
Doug was also actively involved with the Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz, documenting trail rides and maintaining trails all over Santa Cruz County.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Landauer, his son Nikolas Landauer, daughter-in-law Sarasvati Landauer; and his brothers Christopher Landauer, and Timothy Landauer.
He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Doug’s memory be made to Sequoia Audubon Society, www.sequoia-audubon.org/donate.html
