No public services are scheduled for John McHenry who died peacefully in Scotts Valley with family by his side. He was 85.
Mr. McHenry was born in Kansas City, Mo. Soon after, he and his family moved to Oklahoma City, Okla., where he discovered his musical gifts.
He had talent for vocal and instrumental music and went on to graduate from the University of Michigan with a master’s degree in music.
After completing two years of U.S Army service in Korea, Mr. McHenry taught band and orchestra at the junior high and high school level for 22 years at various schools in Michigan, Oklahoma, and California.
In 1972 he made a career change when he and his wife Wilma purchased the Felton Nutrition Center. They owned and operated the store for 30 years and continued working there after selling it in 2002. They lived in Scotts Valley for 31 years.
In retirement, Mr. McHenry enjoyed singing in the Montevalle Chorale, studying the Bible, working on computer projects, lunching with friends, and watching Giants baseball.
One of his favorite memories was a one-on-one, 40-minute conversation with jazz legend Louis Armstrong.
Family said Mr. McHenry had a good-natured sense of humor and was a good storyteller.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Wilma; three sons, Blake McHenry of Columbus, Ohio, Brad McHenry of Tampa, Fla., and Brent McHenry of Scotts Valley, and their wives and children.
He is preceded in death by parents, John Henry McHenry and Nadine Lane McHenry.
