Rob McClelland
July 11, 2014
Scotts Valley resident Rob McClelland passed away on July 11, 2014 in Santa Cruz.
Born in Campbell, Rob grew up spending his summer months in Lake Tahoe.
He lived in Los Gatos and San Jose before he moved to Scotts Valley with his wife, Gail, and their three children in 1989.
He continued to live there for the rest of his life.
Rob owned San Jose Paint & Wallpaper, which was founded by his grandfather. This third-generation business moved to the old Valley Fair Shopping Center.
The name was changed to “San Jose Art,” and sold art materials instead of paint and wallpaper.
In 1984, the business moved location and opened a sign business on Bascom Avenue — San Jose Art and Sign.
People loved coming there just to listen to Rob’s stories about fishing, camping, Little League, soccer, the Oakland Raiders, and the San Jose Sharks.
Of course, his kids were the No. 1 topics.
An avid outdoorsman, Rob loved everything about the outdoors including boating, camping and backpacking.
In the summer, you could find him at any one of his favorite California lakes fishing, driving his boat with his kids, or relaxing lakeside with his dog.
In the winter, you could find him skiing the slopes in Tahoe. He was an excellent skier, but was known for pretending to be an out-of-control beginner going down black diamonds, just for laughs.
Rob was a great father who was always involved with any sports and activities that his children participated in.
He served as the coach for many of his children’s teams and also donated many signs to the local baseball and soccer fields.
Anyone who met Rob would know his amazing stories and one-of-a-kind sense of humor.
Through the years, he remained a generous, caring, very funny, and outgoing gentleman.
He was an amazing dad, friend and all-around great man.
Rob is survived by his children: sons Patrick McClelland of Scotts Valley, Ryan McClelland Scotts Valley, and daughter Shaunna McClelland of Prunedale. He is also survived by his father, Glenn McClelland of San Jose, his brother John McClelland of San Jose, and his sister June Scott of Seattle.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Jeanne McClelland.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3 at the New Life Center, located at 707 Fair Avenue in Santa Cruz.
