One arrest was made Monday evening linked to the double stabbing that left two victims severely injured near Covered Bridge Park in Felton on Sunday—but Sheriff’s deputies are still keeping mum on the details of the attack.
Nineteen-year-old Michael Joseph Colonna of Ben Lomond was arrested during a car stop on Ocean and Leonard streets in Santa Cruz just after 5 p.m. on Monday, said Sgt. Todd Liberty of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.
Police are still looking for a second assailant involved with the stabbing.
“One arrest has been made and we believe he is responsible,” Liberty said. “We’re still following up on leads.”
Detectives said the victims are men and San Lorenzo Valley residents, Liberty said. They were stabbed several times by two attackers armed with knives.
Liberty confirmed that one victim is a man in his 30’s.
Liberty said the victims are expected to live but updates on their conditions were not available Tuesday afternoon.
Colonna was arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder and one count of robbery, according to County Jail records. He is being held on a $150,000 bail.
Liberty would not comment on if the robbery charge is connected to the stabbings or what role Colonna allegedly had in the attack.
“I don’t want to jeopardize the investigation,” Liberty said.
The two victims were airlifted by helicopter from near Henry Cowell State Park to out-of-county trauma centers Sunday, Liberty said.
Investigators have not said what started the violence. However, a neighboring business said they heard the stabbing may have been a drug deal gone bad with teenagers involved.
The Sheriff’s Office is not yet giving out specifics about the crime.
“We feel this is a very serious case and are devoting the entire investigations bureau to solving this crime,” Liberty said before the arrest was made. “At this point we’re working on identifying the parties involved.”
The stabbings took place around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, and since the attack police have contacted multiple witnesses, Liberty said.
Liberty said a press release with more information will be made public in a couple days.
