Both the San Lorenzo Valley High School softball and baseball teams made it past the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs last week, and both teams fell in the second round in tightly contested contests.
Scotts Valley High School’s baseball team snuck into the CCS playoffs, too, but fell in a first-round nail-biter.
San Lorenzo Valley
The Cougar baseball team defeated first-round opponent Stevenson High School 7-2 on May 16 before succumbing in the second round to Menlo School in Atherton on Saturday, May 19.
Against Menlo, the Cougars baseball team managed only one hit, a single by Scott Petroskey in the fourth, falling 8-1. They scored a run in the third on a throwing error.
In the first-round win, Scott Petroskey pitched a complete game, allowing two runs to pace the Cougars, who finished the season 15-8.
The softball team defeated Notre Dame of San Jose 7-2 in Felton on May 16. Mariah Lindberg threw the complete-game four-hitter, and Michelle Hitt went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.
The win put SLV into a quarterfinal matchup with league rival Soquel High. The Knights defeated the Cougars 7-6 in eight innings Saturday in Salinas on a walk-off hit.
The Cougars led 6-4 in the sixth, but Soquel sent the game into extra innings and won it in the bottom of the eighth. The SLV softball team finished the season 21-5.
Scotts Valley
The Falcons battled back from a 5-0 deficit after four innings to narrow the gap to one run but fell to Monterey High 6-5 in the first round of the CCS playoffs on May 16.
Joe Gillette had a two-run single during the rally, and Sean Verenkamp and Matt Snider each went 2-for-4 with an RBI each in the loss.
Scotts Valley finished the season 12-13 after a late-season push propelled their record to 12-12, putting them into the playoffs.
