by Fran Rosen
How old you are, how strong, how wise
Growing every upward, to the skies
So independent, you stand alone
But not really, you fool no one
For hidden deep below the ground
You send your many roots around
Like thick ropes that never end
Are you searching for a friend?
You open your trunk some more each day
To provide a place for children to play
How hungry you are for company
You hide it well, but I can see
Just like people, you need others
For loneliness depresses and smothers
Reach out, oh redwood, do what you do
Spread the world’s enjoyment of you.
